What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is therapy that uses physical agents: exercise and massage and other modalities

Physiotherapy is often sought by those suffering from sports injury, sprains and strains, back and neck pain, whiplash and rehabilitation following surgery.

When considering physiotherapy, look for members of
Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, the professional and educational body for the UK's 40,000 chartered physiotherapists.

What do Chartered Physiotherapists do?

Chartered Physiotherapists are involved in a huge range of care. Common complaints treated by Chartered Physiotherapists include:

Spinal problems – including prolapsed discs, degeneration, sciatica, lumbago, stiff/painful neck and referred arm and leg pains

Joint problems – arthritis, injury, pain and swelling, stiffness in joints Injuries – to muscles ligaments, cartilage and tendons. Work related conditions such as repetitive strain injury (RSI) and sports injuries

After surgery – rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery eg. hip and knee replacements or general physiotherapy after general surgery

Fractures – treatment to increase the healing rate and gain full function once the bones have healed

Gynaecological conditions – including stress incontinence, PCOS, Menopausal symptoms

Physiotherapists will not only treat the problem but by spending time with the patient will often be able to show the patient how to help prevent the problem happening again.

Karen uses a number of different techniques including  mobilisation, massage, electrotherapy (eg. ultrasound) acupuncture and electro acupuncture

What to expect when you visit a Chartered Physiotherapist in Private Practice

The Physiotherapists will first take a detailed history of your condition together with any relevant past medical history.

A physical assessment will then be undertaken to determine the clinical diagnosis of your problem. The physiotherapist will discuss with you a proposed treatment plan and will give you an estimate as to the length of treatment required and the proposed outcome of your treatment.

The initial assessment will probably last up to one hour and subsequent treatment sessions will last between thirty and forty-five minutes approximately.

Every opportunity will be given to you to ask questions about your condition and advice regarding its management and prevention in the future.

Lunch Time (Tui Na) Massage

What is Tui Na

Tui Na is an oriental bodywork therapy that has been used in China for at least 3,600 years. Often called ‘acupuncture without needles', Tui Na uses the traditional Chinese medical theory of harmonising the flow of ‘Qi' through the meridian lines of the body. The term Tui Na translates into ‘push – grasp' in Chinese and relates to the application of massage and manipulation of the soft tissues. Tui Na is used to treat many disorders from soft tissue / sports injury, repetitive strain to arthritic pain and frozen shoulders. It even doubles up as a thorough sports massage or to relieve work related postural pain

What to expect

Following a brief discussion as well as some basic questions regarding general health and any existing conditions you may have, the Tui Na massage will be focused on specific acupressure points, energy trigger points, muscles and joints . This therapeutic method goes directly after any problems, sometimes requiring significant pressure. As with most ‘energy based' treatments, the patient either feels relaxed and tired or surprisingly energised by the treatment and release of pain. Treatment is carried out in a seated or lying position, whichever is the most comfortable, and the Tui Na massage is applied through loose clothing or over a towel. It uses no oils or creams so is ideally suited before or after a day in the office or even at lunchtime: no need for a shower after treatment!
